ABOUT THE BETTER PART

"...Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Hi! I'm Paula Rush. I've always liked Martha because I think I'm often like her -- I rush around a lot (I guess my last name makes sense), busy with lots of things. I feel badly for Martha when Jesus says, "Martha, Martha..." I don't want him shaking his head in disappointment with me. I want him to be pleased with all the things I am worried and distracted about. (I think he really doesn't want us worried and distracted at all.)

But I also think I can be like Martha's sister, Mary. One of my favourite things in the whole world is reading the Word of God with children and thinking about what God is saying to us. A rabbi once told me that when we read and discuss the Word of God together, something new is created -- created through our sharing together. At the same time, it is also ancient, part of the Word of God itself. Isn't that an amazing thought -- the Word of God is ever ancient and ever new!

A rabbi is a Jewish teacher, someone who studies the Torah, the Word of God.

I created this blog so that children could have a safe place to read and think about the Word of God and what it means. We all want to figure out what our place is in God's great plan. I called it "The Better Part" because here we can all sit at Jesus's feet and listen to the Word of God.
